After the line work is all done and approved by the client, I continue with the base colouring. I always use specific layers for each primary colour. The layers are placed underneath the line work. Notice the rough background set up, which is important because of the interplay of light and colour between subject and background. Even skin reflects light and colours from the surrounding environment. Because the line work is still on top of every other element, I consider this still a drawing at this stage
